It has been a real pleasure to facilitate so many face to face events this term such as Commemoration Day, Prize Giving, Open Evenings, welcome BBQs, Parents Evenings and Christmas Concert. We have also been fortunate to hold a number of enrichment activities at school such as the Globe Theatre Shakespeare performances, careers speakers, Jack Petchey Speak Out challenge workshops and several competitions. As you will have seen from our regular school communications, I would like to thank the school staff for running a huge amount of enrichment activities, clubs and fixtures which includes many House competitions and fund-raising events. Our students continue to make us extremely proud with their participation at events and extra-curricular activities; they really are the best ambassadors for Rutlish. The Student Leadership Team have been present at all the events and alongside the CCF contingent, their voluntary work is to be commended.
I would like to congratulate all Year 11 and Year 13 students for their hard work and focus during the mock exam season, and wish the Year 12 students good luck with their exams which start in January. We have congratulated all our students for working towards the school vision (a place to achieve REAL success – respect, equality, aspiration and learning) through Celebration of Achievement assemblies. Students have been awarded 63,289 points this term which go towards the overall House Cup competition.
We are finalising plans for a number of residential trips which include a KS3 visit to the WWII Battlefields and Ypres in October ’23, a sports tour in October ’23, and a ski trip to Austria at February half term ’24. Information about these will be sent to parents in the new year.
I would like to thank all the staff for their hard work this term and the Governing Body, Rutlish Foundation and Old Rutlishians Association for their continued support.
I hope all our families have an enjoyable and peaceful break, and to those who are celebrating, I wish you a Happy Christmas.
Best wishes for 2023,
Ms Howarth

MESSAGES FROM OUR HEADS OF YEAR
|
|
|
Year 7 have had a fantastic start to their Rutlish Journey and what a term it has been. They have now been fully inducted into school life and made new friends, got to know their teachers and school and after the Christmas break they will be in their permanent classes for the rest of the year. The hardest part has been done and once Spring Term starts next year, they will continue to impress, work hard and have fun. You should all be proud parents and carers as the students have shown respect, determination and manners this term and have had several opportunities to engage with the house system and demonstrate their leadership skills. Miss Arthur, their tutors, teaching assistants and I have been very impressed with their start and getting to know more of your children and their unique personalities, and we look forward to the rest of the year. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and holiday and hope it is a restful one.
Mr Jackson-Embling and Ms Arthur
As we approach the end of the Autumn term we would like to take this opportunity to say well done and thank you for all your hard work this term. It is really refreshing to watch you grow and develop as you embark on the second year of your secondary education.
As a year group you have worked really hard this term and have participated in a plethora of activities ranging from house competitions, pantomime trip, musical performances, trip to the care home and a variety of sports. You are beginning to understand that learning goes beyond the classroom and are trying to make your experiences a lot more colourful than just academic learning.
Your tutors have been the driving force behind your success this term and for that we’d like to say a huge thank you to them!
Parents and carers, as usual you are generally very supportive and cooperative and that makes our job so much more rewarding.
Boys, please take the next couple of weeks to cherish and enjoy the time with your family and close friends. Eat well, pay hard and recharge for the spring term ahead.
From Ms Graham & Mr Tucker, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very successful 2023!
Well done on a great start to Year 9. The boys have conducted themselves with maturity but this needs to continue as we now come towards choosing their options for GCSE which will lead them to becoming men.
Please ensure the hard work continues within all subjects and in around school.
Merry Christmas and have a restful time with friends and family.
Mr Holt and Miss Fahy
Dear Year 10
It’s been a really successful first term of your GCSE Options and we have been really pleased with how you have adapted to KS4. It’s been pleasing to see you settle into new subjects, new teachers and new groups of friends.
We have really enjoyed the Yr 10 Jack Petchy ‘Speak out’ Workshops followed by we believe the best ½ school assembly of 2022! 😊
Many congratulations to our young Sport Leaders on their awards along with the Computer Scientists took part in the University of Oxford challenges.
As we embark on a new year and a term, you will have your first formal assessments of Year 10; remember how we started this year. What is your intent? Why are you studying what you’re studying? What do you want in the future? What will you do to implement change where it’s needed or further focus to ensure you have your desired impact? How can you get involved in the new year, do something different, branch out of your comfort zone?
Over the holidays please enjoy the time being with family and friends: relax, rest and recuperate and when we come back aim to be refreshed and ready for the term ahead.
On behalf of Ms Escande and I, we would also like to express our gratitude to your tutors – they constantly work behind the scenes for your benefit as well as having the pleasure of seeing your faces every morning!
On behalf of Ms Escande, Yr 10 Tutors and I, we would like to wish you and your family a Happy Christmas! Please stay safe and well as we welcome in 2023!
Parents and carers – thank you for your continued support and we wish you all a happy and healthy 2023
Ms Edwards and Ms Escande
First of all, congratulations on completing your mock exams. Mock exams are an extremely stressful and high pressured time and I have been really pleased to see how the year group has risen to the challenge. I really hope you are rewarded with a results that you deserve in the spring term. I suggest you use the winter break to rest and recuperate and also to reflect on how the mock exams went. Is there anything you could do better when it comes time for your summer exams (going to bed half an hour earlier, having a decent meal the night before).
Secondly, I have been really encouraged to see how the year group is focused on what their next steps will be post Y11. I have seen that many students have managed to complete applications to one or two sixth forms or colleges. Remember it is always good to have an A plan, B plan and a C plan!
Lastly as you enter your last term and a half of your time at Rutlish, do take the time to reflect on your time here. How would you like to be remembered by the Rutlish community? Remember you are only at school once!
I hope you have a lovely winter break and I look forward to seeing you in the new year.
Mr Foster and Miss Winrow
Year 12 have settled in so well to RR6 this term that it is difficult to imagine a time they weren’t part of the 6th form.
Our students have started their studies with focus, ambition and are already showing they are capable of independent learning. They are forming new relationships with peers and teachers, and becoming ambassadors for the whole school community.
I have been particularly impressed by those who have taken up additional opportunities alongside their academic studies, such as taking the lead in setting up a debate club, joining the Mostyn Road daffodil planting team and helping at school events such as Open evening and parent’s evenings. We have also had students take part in subject specific competitions and they have done brilliantly.
This last half-term has been focused on study skills and revision in advance of the January exams, and we do hope they are able to show the implementation in their revision over the holidays. We encourage students to find a healthy balance between work and rest over the coming weeks.
We want to wish those who celebrate the birth of Christ a wonderful Christmas and those who are looking forward to the festive break …happy holidays. Have a fabulous New Year and we wish you all the very best for 2023.
Mrs Bremner and the Year 13 Team
September seems like a distant memory. It has been a long and busy Autumn Term. You have worked so hard with your mocks and university applications and I am so proud of you all.
We are all looking forward to the Christmas break and our whole staff team would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
May the celebrations of the holiday infuse you all with new energies, new dreams and new hopes for future.
Miss Targuisti

Jack Petchey's "Speak Out" Challenge
We are delighted that our year 10 students have been able to participate in the Jack Petchey’s “Speak Out Challenge” this year. Over 60 year 10 students engaged in a workshop led by an expert trainer; the workshop consists of sharing of expert knowledge, insights on overcoming nerves, learning how to listen and work together to give positive and constructive feedback to each other, interactive exercises for individuals and groups to develop communication skills and expand comfort zones with several opportunities to speak in front of their peers.
The aim is to support students to their exceed expectations. After sharing top tips on public speaking, students were given time to use all these skills to build their own speech from scratch, and deliver a positive message through their speech. From the workshops, 6 students were selected to be in the school semi-finals: Adam B, Hamish R, Vihas A, Camille K, Luke W and Jack R. All students performed their speeches in front of an audience with the Gifted & Talented Coordinator and a member of Senior Leadership. Their speeches explored a range of vital social issues from toxic masculinity to the cost of fast fashion. They should all be very proud of themselves, as we are of them. From the 6 students, 4 were selected to participate in the assembly finals where they performed their speeches in front of the whole school in two assemblies. They have all worked hard and managed to develop their confidence, let their voices be heard, and inspire the whole student body. We are proud to announce that the two students representing Rutlish School in the Regional Finals are Luke W and Jack R. The entire Rutlish community are behind them and are so proud of them!

Computing
This year was the first year Rutlish School had participated in the Oxford University BEBRAS Computational Thinking competition.
Pupils from Years 7 – 12 took part in the annual Bebras Computing Challenge, which focussed on computational and logical thinking. Well done to all pupils participated. A large number of students have been awarded merit or distinction. Congratulations to the eighty pupils who have been awarded the Gold Award, whose scores were in the top 10% nationally. This is a remarkable achievement as very few schools in the country have such high numbers achieving Gold. Pupils achieved gold have been invited to participate in the 2023 Oxford University Computing Challenge, which will take place in January 2023. Special recognition goes to Iskender K. Best in school 10-12 Junior challenge, Freddie M. for the Best in school 12-14 Intermediate challenge, Sean Strong and Ben W. for a tie Best in 14-16 Senior challenge.

RR6 Year 12 LSE Mooting
In the last term, Aidan and Ted in Year 12 have been preparing for the first round of the LSE Moot competition. This is what they had to say:
Last week Wednesday, Ted and I competed in the LSE moot against Heathland School. We managed to beat them on both grounds in our competition and put much preparation into doing so. We first had to research an area of law completely unknown to us, copyright law, before writing an argument in order to submit an appeal for our client. We practised arguments in our debate club which Ted created to promote rational discussion within school. We are incredibly proud of our achievements and hope to continue to the final of the competition and win the LSE moot.

Attic Theatre Enrichment Club
Rutlish students ended the term on a high, with another amazing group ensemble piece, led by facilitators from the Attic Theatre Club.
All year, students have worked assiduously to develop their knowledge of different theatrical genres and acting styles. Season 2 workshops continue in January 2023! Such a great way to build self-confidence, oratory skills while exploring the world of scripted and devised theatre! Rutlish school extends their heartfelt thanks and sends Christmas wishes to the facilitators!
The English department will be hosting workshops for Rutlish’s Y7s to learn more about “playing out the play” as we study it. Working from the actor’s perspective, these workshops explore performance techniques and can be tailored to any Shakespeare play. These will teach our Y7s voice and speech techniques, characterisation, gesture, movement and physicality and – importantly! – how to read Shakespeare’s direction to the actor through the text. This day of activity will explore a range of skills with a focus on communication and self-expression, building confidence, and resilience.
Reading Programme
As KS3 parents are aware, your child is part of the Scholastic reading programme, designed to help students become better readers through understanding more of what they read. Becoming a better reader will help your child to make additional progress in all subjects. To make the most of this fantastic reading programme, please ask your child to show you their Scholastic account on Rutlish365, which will show their Lexile (reading level), books available and recommended reading, along with the quizzes. All technical issues should by now have been cleared up and your child has instructions on how to log in (see Literacy on o365 for support with this). While teachers and tutors encourage reading, if students do not read and quiz on books then all that they will have is a once-termly assessment. Their Lexile is unlikely to improve without the recommended reading in between termly assessments. The Christmas holidays are a great opportunity for more reading – look out for reading suggestions from our Librarian.

Mr Paliotta and the PE Department
In November, we finally managed to get back to in person visits to Psychology conferences.
First up was Year 13. We attended the Psychology in Action at the Emmanuel Centre where we covered the following areas: Music, Identity and Relationships; Applied Behavioural Science; The Psychology of Conspiracy Theories; we even heard from Jonathan Smith, Performance Psychologist to the Paralympic GB athletes on Preparing athletes for the Games.
Our day ended with Peter Lovatt, Director of Dance Psychology at Movement in Practice on the topic of ‘Dance and the brain.’ What’s the link between dancing and the brain? How does dancing change the way we think and solve problems? Why is the way we move linked to our hormonal and genetic makeup? And how was this shown to the students…by getting them all dancing! Perfect way to end a brilliant conference.
Next up was Year 12. It was the Science in Psychology conference held at Friend’s House in Euston and the day started with Cara Flanagan and ‘What is the point (of science)?’ We then had Mike Cardwell explaining ‘Bad science. We also had the privilege of hearing from Tochs Onwuegbusi on ‘Crime – How can we solve it?’ and ended the pre-lunch session with Lucie Clements on ‘Dancing – Science and performance.’
After lunch, we heard about the link between Psychology and Magic from Oliver Meech, one of the youngest members to ever join the ‘Circle of Magic.’ We were taught a trick or two and then waited in anticipation for the final speaker of the day… Andrew Newton. The title of his talk was ‘Hypnosis … is it real?’
Here follows an account of one of our students who experienced it first hand:
My hypnosis experience
Recently, I was privileged enough to be given the opportunity to go to a science and psychology conference held by Cara Flanagan, the author of my A-level AQA psychology textbook. The trip highlighted a lot of the main aspects in psychology as well as more exciting aspects, such as magic, dance and hypnosis. During my time on this trip, I was one of the lucky pupils who was able to be hypnotised. My imagination was more susceptible to the work of Andrew Newton and I found myself doing very peculiar things that I would never have done in the right state of mind.
My experience with hypnosis was one that I will always remember. Andrew told us all to feel relaxed, to slowly close our eyes and focus on our breathing as well as his words. My mind focused hard on his words and my breathing to the point where my limbs felt at ease and, when he touched my shoulder and told me to sleep I almost fell down. I felt really relaxed and my body felt somewhat numb. There were even times where I would get this tingling feeling all throughout my hand, partially like pins and needles. My eyes would sometimes flicker, not fully opening, but it felt as though it was trying to wake me up fully from the hypnosis but not succeeding. I kept going from a state of hearing everything at once to a state where I could only pay attention to Andrew.
Throughout the whole hypnosis, I was conscious. I had remembered what he said somewhat, such as using my shoe as an oxygen mask, but when he woke us up, I felt as though I couldn't breathe without the use of the shoe and my body began to move as if there was turbulence on the aeroplane. It was like my imagination had taken over and I couldn’t not use the shoe as an oxygen mask - I was conscious but not consciously aware of where I truly was. Near the end, when he asked us to be a statue, I felt my body move into this awkward position even though I knew there were so many eyes on me, it felt as though I couldn’t really control it, like was in a trance where I needed to do it.
The full experience of it was fun and confusing as when I was brought into the waking state, my body was in a different position than what it was originally. I even ended up in a weird hug where I was in a headlock. Overall, I enjoyed my time, even though there are now multiple peers who try and hypnotise me. I hope other people get the opportunity to experience this psychology conference.
By: Rachel (Year 12)
It was definitely an experience none of us will soon forget and as potential future psychologists, the students have gained knowledge that textbooks just do not cover.

Panto trip to New Wimbledon Theatre
On Tuesday, over two hundred Rutlish staff and students enjoyed an entertaining afternoon at the Panto!
Brimming with slapstick comedy, dramatic sets and flamboyant costumes, the show had us on the edge of our seats!
This annual event also saw one of our talented year 7 students, performing live on the stage, alongside the famous character ‘’ Odd Jobs’’.
We are delighted that this enrichment opportunity has allowed students to experience live theatre at it’s finest, yet again. Panto is indeed the perfect precursor to the festive season! Students had a ball and look forward to the Panto Cinderella in December 2023!
Care Home Visit
Rutlish is proud of its connections with the wider Merton community.
As part of our community outreach programme, KS3 students paid a visit to Kew House Care Home in Wimbledon. The epitome of kindness and patience, Rutlish students engaged residents in lively conversation, while designing beautiful, personalised Christmas cards. The boys also delivered a Christmas hamper containing woolly slippers, hats and Christmas displays. They also joined the in singing Christmas carols. We look forward to our next visit in December 2023 and wish Kew House staff and residents, a wonderful Christmas, and a peaceful and prosperous new year!
